INDOMIE SPONSORS BALI BARONG FESTIVAL 2005

Klungkung Bali, 6 February 2005 – Indomie, one of the instant noodles products of PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk., sponsors the Bali Barong Festival 2005, a festival organized by the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum from 6 until 10 February 2005 at the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum grounds in Klungkung, Bali.

The opening of the five-day festival is marked by the striking of a commemorative gong by the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia, Art and Film Development Division, Sri Hastanto, who will be accompanied by the Governor of Bali Dewa Beratha and Regent of Klungkung Wayan Candra. Witnessing the opening ceremony are Nyoman Gunarsa of Nyoman Gunarsa Museum, Taufik Wiraatmadja, Director of PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk and thousands of people from the Balinese community.

The Barong dance, is a traditional dance of Bali that depicts the fight between Rwa Bhineda or two opposites that are fighting against each other, to complete world dualism, of black and white, positive and negative, good and evil. This dance has long been used as a medium of moral teachings, effectively conveying good deeds and conducts as virtues of the community.

Festival participants are representatives from each Regency or City in Bali, namely Denpasar City, Badung Regency, Gianyar Regency, Karangasem Regency, Klungkung Regency, Tabanan Regency, Bangli Regency, Singaraja Regency and Negara Regency. Each participating team consists of about 75 persons and will perform a Barong Ket Dance with their own distinctive style and technique. The Barong Ket Dance, in its entirety, is a series of dances incorporating Tabuh Petegak, Barong Ngelembar and Barong Melampahan.

Tabuh Petegak refers to a musical set of Tabuh with a specific Bebarongan uniqueness, using a single drum Pepanggulan. Barong Ngelambar is a barong dance performed by two male teenagers or adults as Juru Bapang. There is no age limitation to these Juru Bapang dancers. Last but not least, the Barong Melampahan is a fragment of a dance drama without any specified theme, allowing the participating team to come up with their own creativity.

The board of judges will evaluate on two aspects, namely form and performance. Criteria for judging the form aspect includes structure, unity/totality, technique, complexity, creativity, ornamentation, flow and originality. The second aspect of performance includes expression, make up and costume, cooperation, cleanliness/neatness, etiquette and harmony.

This festival offers trophies and cash prizes of Rp 100 million for the winning team, Rp. 75 million for second place and Rp. 50 million for third place. In addition the participating teams will also receive development and education funds valued at Rp. 6 million each.

According to Nyoman Gunarsa, this inaugural festival is open to public and it is expected to attract about 1,000 to 3,000 spectators who will come and watch this festival free of charge everyday, including special invitations such as forign consuls, ambassadors, community figures, religious leaders and representatives from Bali communities from each region.

The announcement and prize presentation will be held on Thursday, 10 February 2005 concurrently organised with the closing ceremony which is scheduled to be officiated by the Governor of Bali. The closing ceremony, as with the entire festival schedule, is free of charge to the public.

For Indofood, Indomie’s objective in sponsoring the Bali Barong Festival is to play a part in preserving and developing Balinese culture and art, specifically the Barong dance that has existed in Balinese community for hundreds of years.

This balance between physical, emotional and spiritual aspects are fostered through supports of community events such as the Bali Barong Festival 2005.

Besides the significant contribution to the Bali Barong Festival 2005, PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk. consistently makes efforts towards culture and art preservation and development in Indonesia. Amongst others is a partnership with Visi Anak Bangsa in the publication of 32 films and Pustaka Anak Nusantara encyclopaedia, aimed to provide the children of Indonesia with an awareness about the multi-cultural character of the country. Other programs are the publication of children folklore story books and the Indofood Art Award and Recognition for paintings in 2002 and 2003.
