PRESS RELEASE
HOW TO SCORE IN TENNIS
Bali, April 17, 2005 ... Tennis consists, usually, of winning the best of three sets (i.e. 2 sets to nil, or 2-1). That is what happens at the Wismilak International. In men's tennis, they sometimes play the best of five sets, always in the Davis Cup international team competition and at the four Grand Slams of the Australian, French and US Opens, and Wimbledon , and sometimes in the final of the Masters events.
To win a game, a player must win a minimum of four points (15-0, 30-0, 40-0, game). If the score goes to 40-40, known as deuce, a player must win two clear points to win the game. The first of these points is known as Advantage (i.e. 40-40, Advantage player A, deuce, Advantage player B, Game (player B wins a second point)).
A set is won by becoming the first player to win six games, but with a two game margin (i.e. 6-0 up to 6-4). If the score reaches 5-5, then the first player to win the next two games wins the set (7-5). If the score reaches 6-6, a tiebreak is played. This is scored differently, i.e. 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 etc, with the first player reaching 7 points with at least a two point margin winning the tiebreak. If the score goes to 6-6, the tiebreak continues until a player earns a two point margin (i.e. 11-9).
A player can have two attempts to serve. If both serves are unsuccessful (i.e. the ball does not land in the service area on the far side of the net) it is a double-fault and the point goes to the opponent. Points are earned by successfully playing the ball into the main playing area of your opponent (the two large oblongs, but not between the two lines at each side of the court unless it is a doubles match. The first player to not do that (i.e. to play the ball wide or long, or into the net) loses the point.
Editor's Notes :
Since its debut in 1994, Wismilak International Women's World Tennis Tour had been held in Surabaya with the forth year's prize money in 1998 totaling to US$ 107,000. Initially the event was named “Wismilak Open” however it then changed to “Wismilak International” in 1996 as a reflection of the organiser's corporate expansion into the international market. The event's historical venue of Embong Sawo Tennis Club in Surabaya turned 100 years old in 1997. Up until today, Wismilak International Women's World Tennis Tour is still the largest tournament in WTA's calendar in South East Asia .
